DUBLIN, Ireland - A leading immunologist has said Ireland should seek to vaccinate its entire population by the end of June.
"Denmark, who are like us remember, they're depending on the EU, they say they'll have all their people done by June 27 - which is well ahead of us. Why can't we be like Denmark, is the question?" asked Professor Luke O'Neill of Trinity College Dublin, during an interview on Newstalk.
Denmark, with a population of 5.7 million, compares to Ireland's 4.9 million, as both countries will receive approximately the same number of Covid-19 vaccines from the European Medicines Agency.
O'Neill's comments followed the announcement by the European Medicines Agency that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should be approved by the middle of March.
"We should be like Denmark," he added. "I'd love it if our Minister for Health said 'our goal is June 27', just like Denmark, to have our whole population vaccinated."
O'Neill noted that if countries with similar size populations are speeding to complete vaccinating their entire populations, then Ireland should also set a date to complete the vaccinations.
